Background Information
One of the most scenic parks at the heart of the rift valley with a very rich flamingo population, indeed the largest worldwide. The park covers an area of 188 KM2 and at an altitude of 1756 M. above sea level. Animals include the lion, leopard, black and white rhinos, giraffes. Spectacular views surround the lake with hills and cliffs, which are home to hundreds of baboons.
The lake is home to thousands of the lesser and greater flamingos and has several rivers and streams emptying into it. The saline waters of the lake offer a thriving atmosphere of blue-green algae (spirulina platensis), which is the basic food for the lesser flamingos. Fish eating birds are also present which include the Cormorant, Great white pelicans and the African fish eagle.
