Guided tours to various archaeological and historical sites can also be arranged, whether to neighbouring Manda Island or further afield to Pate Island, where the ruins of the earliest known Swahili settlement of Shanga – dated to the 8th century AD – can be visited. Lamu is vehicle free and foot is the normal method of transport but if walking is too much donkeys can be hired!
